Before coming holidays on February, 23rd and on March, 8 th, "Dieta -18" has opened new shop on Ligovskiy prosp., 212. It is second shop " Dieta -18 " on the Ligovskiy prospect (a supermarket "Dieta-18", Ligovskiy prosp, 44). The powerful part of assortment is borrowed with cookery.

Ready salads, tasty and always fresh, fifteen names, use special popularity of buyers: "Olivie", "Sea wolf", "Yaroslavna", "Spring", " Alive force", " the “Herring under a fur coat ", "Meat", "Mimosa", "Caesar".

Besides it, you can get ready hot dishes: the baked pike perch, stuffed cabbage leaves , the baked pork, baked puddings. On sale the chilled meat of excellent quality: pork, beef, chickens. We offer meat chilled half-ready products: beef-stroganoff, roasted meat, others.

The Russian Pork Team 2006 Program – St Petersburg Group (leader: Maria Kulakhmetova)

I would like to express my gratitude to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) for an opportunity to visit pork meat processing factories, to see the full production process in action, also to see new products, cuts workable for the Russian meat market and to meet top management of the leading US pork export companies in person.

Just a few words about the Program. Those five working days were filled with interesting excursions, meetings and presentations. I liked the choice of pork manufacturing companies I had a pleasure to visit: Farmland, Smithfield, Excel, Tyson, Pine Ridge and HyVee / SuperTarget / PDI Distribution Centres. Unfortunately such company as SWIFT was not included to the above list to my regret. I think it was important to visit factory floors at each factory, to see slaughtering process, to see the difference between the same meat cuts from different suppliers, to get to know logistics system in use, warehouse system and effective operative distribution system. The latter is extremely important for Russia, particularly St Petersburg market with its limited warehouse opportunities and increasingly large meat turnover!

I enjoyed my visit to Pine Ridge sow meat processing factory. Sow meat produced at that factory is quite lean compare to its European analogues. Sow meat boneless cuts look quite well. They also can vary in sizes and packaging – according to the customer’s request. I was quite impressed with the whole skin removal process from the carcasse at Tyson factory, bacon production at Farmland factory (not only production process but tasting was incredible!), humane slaughter process at Excel, hygienically clean production premises at Smithfield – all that were certain points for the whole St Petersburg team which should be taken aboard.

We all were very pleased to know that practically all factories are retail certified by Russian veterinary department. It’s a huge advantage considering tightening of all veterinary control these days!

I would like to say a few words about our group leader, Maria Kulakhmetova. She used her excellent organizing skills for making a team from Program participants, she used all her creativeness for enthusiastic support of everybody in the group, her presentation skills were tremendous.

Summurising all the above I would like to make few recommendations for the future planning of the program: when booking the airline tickets please take into account time between connection flights (we had a few problems on our flight back from Atlanta which postponed our return back home for 24 hours). I would like to express my gratitude for this useful Program – it’s a great promotion for US pork meat.

The History of Picnics

The word "picnic" came from the name of a dinner club famous in the middle of the 19th century England. The club was known for its delicious food (which guests used to bring there themselves) and for its ill reputation. Later the word "picnic" was used to refer to outdoor dinners in nature surroundings.

Picnics became very popular in England and France. English aristocracy enjoyed a refined cuisine picnics served by their servants on a porcelain dinner service. Everything was brought for a picnic - from a simple cheese grater to crystal glasses and family silver cutlery. All food was prepared in the open air by a substantial number of cooks because the preparation demanded top class skills. In comparison to other European countries in England the choice for a picnic spot was extremely important. You could not just go out and have some food served on a lawn. Finding a special spot with a great view - this is the real English style picnicking. There was one more special rule which had to be strictly followed: food should be prepared at least 200 metres away from the eating spot. Such rule may seem strange now - the whole process of shashlyk making and barbequing has become the main part of any picnic now.


USEFUL TIPS:
  • Put meat pieces on a skewer close to each other.
  • Cover meat pieces with marinade while cooking to avoid meat dryness.
  • For succulent and juicy shashlyk (meat kebab) add sunflower oil to your marinade.
  • Fish kebabs: Sprinkle some salt and sugar onto your fish fillets and leave them for an hour. Then wash these fish fillets and marinate. This way fish pieces will not break during cooking.
  • Also try to bake vegetables: aubergines, sweet peppers and mushrooms

Dieta-18 food stores are expanding their variety of take-away foods sold on the premises due to the increased demand both in the city centre and in the outskirts.

Recently introduced salad bars immediately became a consumers’ hit and gained a substantial share in the food stores network turnover. All these reasonably priced salads are prepared right there on the premises from the best quality ingredients. They make the taste of our salads much superior compare to the similar production from some local competitors.

Our salad bars boast a great variety of both traditional salads, such as Russian salad, Beetroot and Diced Marinated Herring Salad, and delicatessen salads, such as Tsar Salad with Smoked Salmon and Sea Wolf Seafood Salad. There are more than 20 different varieties of savory, meat, fish and mushroom salads. The popularity of our salads is so high that you often see people queuing for them – a good sign for a recently introduced product.

One of our centrally located food stores at 38 Sadovaya Street also introduced take-away hot meals. You can choose different ready-to-eat chicken, beef, pork, savory, fish dishes: such as chicken medallions, grilled fillet of shark, fried marinated pike perch, which can go with savory rice or mushroom stuffed baked potatoes.

Our customers were delighted with a new modern design of fish section in one of our food stores at 38 Sadovaya Street and they gave it their 100% approval. We hope our customers will enjoy the convenience and the expanded assortment of fish and fish products in this section.
